Cop shot dead over old rivalry; police launch manhunt
MEERUT, July 1 -- A head constable of the Uttar Pradesh Police was shot dead late Sunday night in his native village Sunhaira, in Baghpat district. The accused, a local primary school teacher, fled the scene and is currently on the run, said police.
The victim, 32-year-old Ajay Panwar, was posted in Saharanpur and had returned to his village two days earlier on leave to attend a housewarming ceremony. According to the police, Ajay was out for a walk near his house when he was attacked by Mohit, a primary school teacher from the same village who also works in Saharanpur.
Police stated that preliminary investigations revealed that the two had a heated argument during a village cricket match about a week ago. The dispute reportedly intensified over the following days through exchanges on WhatsApp. On Sunday evening, they came face-to-face again, and the confrontation turned violent. During the altercation, Mohit allegedly pulled out a country-made pistol and shot Ajay at close range.
Ajay was immediately rushed by family members to a hospital in Sonipat, Haryana, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Local police reached the scene shortly after the incident and sent the body for postmortem.
Additional superintendent of police Narendra Pratap Singh confirmed that the murder appears to be the result of an old enmity. A case of murder has been registered against Mohit, and multiple teams have been deployed to track him down and arrest him.
The incident has triggered tension in the village, prompting police deployment to maintain law and order. Authorities have assured the victim's family that the accused will be arrested soon and brought to justice....
