Contract cancelled, Rs 5K fine imposed
VARANASI, June 19 -- After a parking ticket at the Banaras railway station caused an outrage on social media as it mentioned an exorbitant charge of Rs 100 per hour for parking a bike beyond the first hour along platform no.1, amounting to Rs 2,400 for 24 hours, the railway administration has cancelled the parking contract and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on the contractor.
North Eastern Railways Varanasi division public relations officer Ashok Kumar said, "After the complaint of overcharging against the parking contractor, his contract has been cancelled. A fine of Rs 5000 has been imposed on him. All the tickets have been confiscated."
Five days ago, an image of a parking ticket went viral on social media as it showed that the charge for parking a bike was Rs 100 per hour after more than an hour.
Rajesh Kumar Srivastava, a resident of Mahmoorganj, lodged a complaint with the railway officials in this connection, pointing out the astonishing charge of Rs 2400 for 24 hours.
In his complaint, he also said the hourly charge for parking a cycle was Rs 50, amounting to Rs 1200 for 24 hours.
Thereafter, officials of the Banaras railway station took cognizance of the matter and ensured action against the parking contractor....
