VARANASI, June 26 -- To make the city roads and lanes free of encroachment, a constable each will keep a watch on every 100-metre stretch of road and every 50-metre stretch of a lane in Varanasi. The step being taken under a special drive aims to stop recurrence of encroachment that causes traffic jams. "A plan under encroachment removing drive has been made under which a constable each will be assigned duty to keep an eye on every 100-metre stretch of road and 50-metre stretch of lanes in city localities, including Kotwali, Chowk, Dashashwamedh, and Luxa, Bhelupur, Assi, and Lanka," said deputy commissioner of police (crime) Sarvanan T. Each constable will keep a watch on the stretch of the road assigned to him and will stop any encroachment. He will ensure legal action against habitual encroachers. The plan will be implemented effectively in the entire city to stop the recurrence of encroachment on roads and streets that causes traffic jams, he added. He said that encroachments causing obstruction in traffic flow were removed and FIRs have been lodged against 171 encroachers in four police station areas during an anti-encroachment drive carried out in localities under Kotwali, Chowk, Dashashwamedh, and Luxa police stations on Friday and Saturday. Assistant commissioner of police, Dashashwamedh, Atul Anjan Tripathi said surveillance is being maintained in areas prone to repeated encroachments. We are also identifying habitual violators who repeatedly encroach upon public spaces. A list is being prepared, and strict action will be taken against them. Legal proceedings will follow against those who encroach the roads. It has been found that in certain locations, every 50 metre of road needs regular monitoring, said the ACP and added that in such locations, a constable will keep an eye.Meanwhile, Tripathi, along with the police team did foot patrolling in Dashashwamedh area and warned those who were trying to encroach roads in a locality under Dashashwamedh area....
