Constable suspended for 'tearing' Ambedkar poster; probe on
GORAKHPUR, April 12 -- Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Kaustubh on Saturday suspended a police constable for allegedly tearing a poster of Dr BR Ambedkar in the Gola area of the district. The incident, which was captured on CCTV cameras at Bawari Crossing, prompted action from officials to quell growing resentment among the local Dalit community.
Circle officer (CO) Darvesh Kumar said the incident occurred on the night of April 8 when the constable in question was on patrol duty. A preliminary inquiry indicated his involvement in removing and tearing the poster, which had been put up by locals as part of decorations ahead of Ambedkar Jayanti. The poster was also found vandalised, he said, adding a departmental inquiry has been ordered into the matter.
The incident triggered outrage among local residents and political groups, leading to protests and the submission of memorandums demanding strict action.
Members of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Azad Samaj Party staged demonstrations and sought the arrest of those responsible.
Senior police officials, including SP (south) Dinesh Kumar Puri, rushed to the spot and assured that strict disciplinary action would follow upon completion of the inquiry. "Indiscipline by police personnel will not be tolerated," an official said.Police have examined CCTV footage and complaints submitted by social organisations. The footage allegedly shows the constable removing the poster late at night and setting it on fire.Officials said further action will be taken based on the findings of the departmental proceedings....
