Congress slams Dhami govt for 'Urban Naxal' remark
Dehradun, Oct. 19 -- The Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UKPCC) on Saturday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttarakhand, alleging that it has "failed on every front related to public concerns" and is now "trying to hide behind the Urban Naxal term" ahead of the 2027 assembly elections.
The remarks come days after CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said on October 15 that "Urban Naxal gangs" were misleading the youth of the state. He was referring to the eight-day protest staged by government job aspirants in Dehradun earlier this month against the alleged UKSSSC exam paper leak.
"Today, the urban Naxal gang and anti-national toolkit are conspiring against us......they protest just for the sake of protesting....they are backed up by anti national forces....but I will not allow plans of urban Naxals to succeed in Uttarakhand," he had said in Kashipur.
Addressing a press conference at the state Congress headquarters in Dehradun, Suryakant Dhasmana, senior vice-president of the UKPCC, on Saturday, said, "The BJP government has proven to be a complete failure on every front related to public concerns and is now trying to hide behind imaginary issues to mislead the public. The have now coined the term urban Naxal to cover their failures."
He added that the state government must clarify who these so-called "urban Naxals" are. "If such gangs are active in the state, the government should reveal their leaders and inform whether it has apprised the Union Home Ministry of this sensitive issue," he said.
Referring to Union home minister Amit Shah's recent statement that the elimination of Naxalism is in its final stage, Dhasmana questioned how seriously the Centre was treating this "new situation" of urban Naxalism in Uttarakhand.
"Uttarakhand is a sensitive border state sharing boundaries with China, Tibet, and Nepal. If urban Naxalism has emerged here, it's a grave matter, and the government must answer," he said.
Dhasmana said that after ruling for two consecutive terms, the party has failed to deliver on its promises and has no achievements to show. "The BJP has coined the new slogan of Urban Naxals, and everyone from the chief minister to party workers is chanting it in unison," he said.
He alleged that unemployment is at its peak, and the government is misleading the public by presenting inflated figures of 26,000 government job appointments. He said the Congress demands a white paper giving department-wise details of government recruitment in the last three and a quarter years.
Dhasmana further alleged that the state government has failed to implement the Supreme Court's order upholding the Nainital High Court's directive for equal pay for equal work and regularisation of Uttarakhand Purva Sainik Kalyan Limited (UPNL) employees.
He alleged that incidents of atrocities against women, including murders and rapes, are on the rise, and ruling party members involved in many cases. "Law and order in the state is in shambles," he said.
The Congress leader also criticised the state's health care system, referring to recent public protests in Chaukhutia.
He said the disaster management system has "completely collapsed," and the government has not even been able to determine the death toll in the Dharali tragedy.
BJP state media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said the people of Uttarakhand were well aware of the Congress's deceit and taught the party a lesson in the 2017 and 2022 assembly elections. "They cannot mislead the people of the state with false narratives. The public has already taught them lessons in the 2017 and 2022 assembly polls, and they will face an even bigger defeat in 2027," Chauhan said....
