Congress questions PM's appeal on gold, fuel use
LUCKNOW, May 12 -- Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai on Monday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal asking people to avoid buying gold for a year and use petrol and diesel judiciously, asking whether the country was facing an economic crisis.
Addressing a press conference, Rai said if the situation was serious, the Prime Minister should explain the actual condition of the economy, crude oil prices, forex reserves and inflation to the people. He alleged that instead of asking citizens to stop buying gold, BJP leaders should donate gold in the national interest.
Referring to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Rai said she had donated her gold during the 1962 India-China war.
Rai further accused the BJP government of burdening common people with rising prices of gas, food items and school fees, adding that the Prime Minister's remarks had also created anxiety among bullion traders and travel operators.htc...
