Congress protests Centre's 'misuse' of ED, LoP detained
Jaipur, Dec. 18 -- The Rajasthan Congress on Wednesday launched a protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government, alleging misuse of constitutional institutions, particularly the Enforcement Directorate (ED), as party workers attempted to march towards the BJP state headquarters in Jaipur.
The protest quickly escalated into a tense standoff after police stopped the march by erecting barricades, leading to heated arguments, pushing and brief scuffles between protesters and security personnel.
The march began from the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) headquarters, with hundreds of party workers and leaders participating. As the procession neared the BJP office, police blocked the route, triggering chaos at the barricades.
Congress MLA Manish Yadav attempted to climb over the barricade to cross to the other side. Police personnel stopped him using batons, causing him to lose balance and fall.
Police later detained several senior Congress leaders, including PCC chief Govind Singh Dotasra and leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully, along with many party workers.
Addressing the media persons, Jully launched a sharp attack on the BJP, alleging double standards on corruption. "The BJP's true character, conduct and face have been exposed before the public. The BJP accuses others of corruption, but the moment someone joins the BJP, all their sins are forgiven," he said.
Jully also raised serious questions over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging large-scale manipulation. He said the BJP must explain why around 4.2 million voters' names were deleted and notices issued to another 1.1 million voters. "Were these voters fake? If a voter existed earlier, where has he gone now? If the poor and labourers have shifted, their votes should have increased elsewhere. Instead, votes have decreased everywhere," he alleged, accusing the BJP of trying to win elections by cutting votes rather than on the plank of development.
PCC chief Govind Singh Dotasra reiterated the Congress's stand on the National Herald case, accusing the Centre of politically motivated harassment. He said Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were subjected to nearly 55 hours of ED questioning to intimidate the opposition. "Despite the pressure, the court has made it clear that the ED case does not stand. This conspiracy was meant only to threaten and harass, but truth has prevailed and will continue to prevail," Dotasra said.
He asserted that neither Sonia Gandhi nor Rahul Gandhi drew any salary or personal profit from National Herald newspaper, alleging that the case was selectively built to target the Congress leadership. "That is why we are on the streets today, gheraoing the BJP," he said.
MLA Manish Yadav alleged that the government had issued clear instructions to stop Congress workers. "This protest will continue against the BJP government and its fabricated allegations," he said.
Commenting on the protest, state BJP secretary Mukesh Pareek said it was a "flop show," claiming that all the Congress allegations had fallen flat as the party failed to even mobilise adequate numbers. He also termed the protest as propaganda....
