Cong's remarks on SIR contradictory, says BJP
Jaipur, Dec. 3 -- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Madan Rathore on Tuesday criticised Congress leaders for making contradictory statements about the special intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists, asserting the necessity of the process to cleanse electoral rolls.
Rathore said, "Even the Supreme Court has also now accepted that SIR is a must. It was conducted many times in 2002 and 2003. It is necessary to purify the voters' lists. The Congress and other opposition parties must be worried of their political benefits and therefore opposing it. However, their statements are extremely contradictory. Some of them stated that SIR is wrong while many of them said that the time for the SIR survey should be extended for a proper and minute revision."
He pointed out that Congress leader Sachin Pilot demanded an extension of the SIR deadline for a transparent process, while other Congress leaders called the entire exercise erroneous. "What do they want to say exactly?" Rathore questioned.
On Sunday, Pilot had said during his visit to Tonk: "The government is putting a tremendous pressure on the BLOs to finish their works. They are dying and committing suicide. They should give a proper time to them so that they can work properly. There should be a fair and impartial approach to revise the voter lists."
Addressing opposition criticism of the central BJP government for allegedly blocking discussion on SIR in Parliament, Rathore said, "Nobody said that there will be no discussion on SIR. But the opposition should remember how to maintain the honour of the house.
Parliament is a space for healthy discussion but not for howling that wastes the time of the people and the members of the house."
Rathore also condemned the Congress for opposing celebrations marking the 150 years of Vande Mataram.
Responding, Congress spokesperson Swarnim Chaturvedi said, "There is no contradiction in anyone's statement.
The SIR is taking place is wrong, which Sachin Pilot has also flagged. Why are they putting so much pressure on the BLOs to conduct the process fast if there is nothing wrong?"...
