Meerut, Nov. 9 -- A second-year Bachelor of Arts (BA) student set himself on fire on the DAV Degree PG College campus in Muzaffarnagar district's Budhana town on Saturday allegedly over harassment and negligence by the college administration regarding a fee-related issue, the police said. Deputy superintendent of police Gajendra Pal Singh confirmed that the student was in a critical condition in Meerut and that his initial statement was being recorded. "We are investigating the circumstances that led to the incident. Both the college administration and the student's family will be questioned," said a senior officer. The college administration has announced the formation of an internal inquiry committee to look into the allegations. The 20-year-old student reportedly poured petrol over himself before setting himself afire within the college premises. His fellow students rushed to save him, managing to douse the fire and take him to a nearby hospital. Due to the extent of his burns, doctors referred him to Meerut Medical College in a critical condition. Soon after the incident, hundreds of agitated students gathered outside the college gate, raising slogans against the administration and demanding a fair and transparent investigation. Police and senior administrative officials reached the spot to control the situation and pacify the crowd. According to classmates, the student had been expressing his frustration for several days, accusing the college authorities of mental harassment and apathy over issues related to his fee submission. He had earlier sent written complaints to the university and the district administration, alleging that the college was pressuring him unfairly and not responding to his concerns. On Friday, he submitted another written complaint to the sub divisional magistrate and circle officer of Budhana, claiming that his voice was being suppressed at every level and that he was mentally distressed. In a video posted on social media prior to the incident, he accused principal Pradeep Kumar and several teachers of harassment and misconduct. He claimed the principal had physically assaulted him and later tried to silence him by calling the police. He further alleged that when he attempted to submit his complaint at the SDM office, a college teacher snatched the letter and returned it to the principal to prevent any official action. The incident led to widespread anger among students, who accused the administration of pushing the student to the brink. Many staged a sit-in outside the campus gate, demanding accountability and the suspension of those named in his complaint. Principal Pradeep Kumar, however, dismissed all allegations as baseless, stating that the fee collection and grievance processes were conducted as per institutional norms and that no student was mistreated....
