Cold spell may continue with little snow: IMD
Mussoorie, Jan. 6 -- Intense winter conditions continued to prevail across Uttarakhand despite dry weather, with several hill stations recording very low minimum temperatures over the past 24 hours, according to the daily bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dehradun centre, on Monday.
Mukteshwar in Nainital district recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 1.4degC, which was 0.7 degrees below its normal average. Tehri and Ranichauri followed closely, registering minimum temperatures of 1.5degC and 1.6degC, respectively. Tehri's night temperature showed a significant negative departure of 1.6 degrees from the seasonal norm.
Pithoragarh also experienced a cold night, with the minimum temperature settling at 2.1degC. Mussoorie recorded a minimum temperature of 2.9degC, though the hill town enjoyed bright sunshine during the day on Sunday.
The state capital Dehradun witnessed comparatively moderate conditions, recording a maximum temperature of 20.6degC, which was 0.8 degrees above normal, and a minimum of 8.0degC, 1.4 degrees above normal.
In contrast, sharp temperature variations were observed in the plains and lower foothill regions. Pantnagar reported a warmer-than-normal night, with the minimum temperature at 8.5degC, a departure of 2.4 degrees.
However, its daytime temperature remained suppressed, with the maximum reaching only 17.2degC, 1.7 degrees below normal.
Roorkee experienced one of the coldest days in the plains, with the maximum temperature climbing to just 13.5degC, a significant 4.3 degrees below the normal average, indicating daytime chill.
With wintry conditions intensifying, ground frost was reported from Mukteshwar and Tehri.
Mohkampur in Dehradun recorded the state's highest maximum temperature at 20.6degC, while Mukteshwar remained the coldest location. The IMD has forecast very light rain or snowfall at isolated places in the higher reaches of Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts on Tuesday. Snowfall is likely at elevations above 2,800 metres, while dry weather is expected to persist in the remaining districts.
CS Tomar, director of the IMD Dehradun centre, said snowfall activity would remain weak.
"Very light rain or snow is predicted in areas above 2,800 metres in the hilly districts, though the chances of snowfall are low.
Dense fog will continue in the plains, but its duration is likely to reduce considerably over the next two to four days," he said.
During the past 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Monday, visibility was severely impacted in some pockets due to dense fog, dropping to 30 metres in Kashipur and 50 metres in Bageshwar....
