Dehradun, July 29 -- Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday ordered the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) at the police headquarters level to closely monitor Operation Kalanemi, aimed at taking strict action against individuals impersonating saints/religious leaders/ascetics and defrauding the public, officials aware of the matter said, adding that the CM also instructed officials to initiate steps to make anti-conversion legislation more stringent. Chairing a high-level meeting with senior officials at the Secretariat in Dehradun, Dhami underscored the seriousness of the issue and stressed that "Uttarakhand, being a border state and the sacred land of Sanatan Dharma, cannot afford any attempts that may alter its demographic character". "Any effort to disrupt the social fabric or manipulate the population demography through unlawful conversions must be stopped with immediate and strict action," he said. Dhami said that Operation Kalanemi has played a crucial role in identifying and cracking down on elements involved in conversion-related activities. He ordered its monitoring by setting up an SIT that will work under the direct supervision of the police headquarters. "The police must remain vigilant and keep a close eye on suspicious activities that point towards forced or deceptive conversions. At the same time, those already trapped in such circumstances should be offered proper counselling and guidance," Dhami said. He also called for a comprehensive review of the current anti-conversion law and directed that the legal framework be made more stringent to plug existing loopholes and enhance enforcement mechanisms. On July 10, a day ahead of the start of the Kanwar Yatra, Dhami had announced 'Operation Kalanemi' - a statewide campaign - to take strict action against individuals impersonating as saints/religious leaders/ascetics and defrauding the public. Officials aware of the development said the directive comes in light of rising incidents where people, especially women, have been cheated by such impersonators misusing religious garb. The CM had said, "Anyone misusing the identity of saints or religious figures to deceive people will be dealt with sternly, as such actions not only violate the law but also hurt religious sentiments and tarnish the image of Sanatan Dharma. State government is committed to preserving the sanctity of religious traditions and protecting people from exploitation carried out in the name of faith". Referring to a character in Hindu tradition, Kalanemi, who tried to deceive Lord Hanuman by disguising himself as a saint, Dhami said, "Modern-day fraudsters are using similar tactics to mislead innocent citizens. The state government will not allow Uttarakhand's identity as Devbhoomi, the land of gods, to be sullied by such impersonators..This campaign is not against any religion or sect but is solely aimed at protecting the people from those who spread deception in the name of faith. Those found guilty will face severe legal consequences regardless of their background"....
