CM dhami seeks approval of 5 hydropower projects
Dehradun, July 16 -- Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met Union jal shakti minister CR Patil in New Delhi on Monday evening and requested for the development and construction of five hydropower projects to accelerate the social and economic development of Uttarakhand, officials aware of the matter said on Tuesday.
During the meeting, CM Dhami emphasised the need to expedite the development of these projects, which are among the 21 hydropower schemes (2123 MW capacity) recommended by an expert committee following directives from the Supreme Court. He said that the implementation of these five projects would significantly boost the socio-economic development of Uttarakhand.
Officials said Uttarakhand has to purchase electricity from other states and the central pool for its electrical energy requirements. Construction of new environment-friendly hydroelectric projects is necessary for proper arrangement of power supply and to meet the increasing needs of the state.
The new hydel projects will also provide employment opportunities to the local people and will greatly help in the socio-economic development of the region and the problem of migration of the state can also be controlled....
