clashes erupt between groups of Kanwariyas
Haridwar, July 21 -- Tensions flared at a busy intersection in Haridwar after two groups of Kanwariyas clashed outside a city hotel on Sunday, leading to a brief halt in traffic, police said.
Police said that the incident took place outside the Grand Shiva Hotel near Shankar Ashram, where one group of Kanwariyas, including female pilgrims, was reportedly staying.
They said that a heated argument broke out between a male Kanwariya from a group and one of the female kanwariyas from the hotel group.
The argument between them escalated quickly, prompting members from the female Kanwariya's group to intervene, the officials further said, adding that they then physically assault the opposing pilgrims.
A police officer from the Mela control room said, "We received information about the violence and immediately dispatched personnel to the location. The situation was brought under control swiftly. Both groups were given stern warning and they agreed to resolve the matter without pressing charges."
The officer further said that the pilgrims were separated and sent onward to continue their journey in different directions, preventing any further confrontation....
