city may get another postmortem house soon
Lucknow, Aug. 11 -- A new postmortem house is likely to come up in the state capital soon, a proposal for which has already been sent to the government for approval. Work will begin once the proposal is accepted and official instructions are issued, authorities said.
According to chief medical officer (CMO) Dr NB Singh, the district health committee submitted the proposal a few days ago. "We are awaiting the government's nod. Once approved, work on the new facility will begin immediately," he said.
At present, the only postmortem house in Lucknow is located at King George's Medical University (KGMU). It is old and heavily burdened, conducting around 7,500-8,000 postmortems annually. Bodies are brought here from 52 police stations, including those under the Government Railway Police (GRP). On an average, 20 postmortems are conducted daily, with the number rising to 30-40 during extreme heat, Dr Singh added.
Given this situation, a meeting of the district health committee was held under the chairmanship of the district magistrate, where the need for an additional postmortem house was discussed. The proposal was then drafted and forwarded to the state government.
Dr Singh also noted that postmortem houses are generally set up in medical institutions that offer MBBS courses. "We are identifying such institutions and suitable locations within them where the new facility, equipped with all necessary infrastructure, can be developed," he said.
Mortuaries are usually located within or near hospitals, often in separate buildings or designated sections to ensure hygiene, privacy, and security.
