City chokes as thousands flood streets
LUCKNOW, June 4 -- As Lucknow celebrated the second-last Bada Mangal of this year on Tuesday, the city witnessed severe traffic congestion across several parts as thousands of devotees took to the streets to celebrate. Roadside bhandaras held across the city and multiple traffic diversions put in place by the police added to the chaos, leaving commuters frustrated and stuck for hours.
The central areas were the worst affected, particularly roads leading to Hazratganj, Hanumant Dham and KD Singh Babu Stadium. Clarks Awadh Chauraha also saw major logjams. Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) was flooded with images and posts from residents caught in long queues of traffic on their daily routes.
Roadside bhandaras set up in various places significantly disrupted the traffic flow. In many cases, pedestrians spilled over onto the roads, narrowing already congested lanes. Devotees heading to Hanuman temples like Hanuman Setu and Aliganj Mandir added to the crowd, with roads near Hanumant Dham almost coming to a standstill. Commuters reported that at least two ambulances were trapped near KD Singh Babu Stadium.
The Lucknow Traffic Department had implemented diversions at 14 major points to manage the expected festival rush. However, the volume of vehicles and the widespread bhandaras overwhelmed the system. Key routes such as Clarks Awadh Tiraha and temple approaches remained heavily congested throughout the day.
Making the situation worse, traffic on Vidhan Sabha Marg was halted for over 15 minutes due to VVIP movement for a Cabinet meeting....
