Citizens break down, allege bribe demands
LUCKNOW, June 7 -- Grievances related to water shortage, clogged drains, and alleged corruption dominated Sampoorna Samadhan Diwas at the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) headquarters in Lalbagh area of the state capital on Thursday, as anguished residents burst into tears, accusing officials of negligence and bribe demands.
Prema Jaiswal, a woman from Lalkuan area, broke down in front of senior officials, alleging that a contractor demanded Rs 22,000 to reconnect her water pipeline.
"The pipeline was broken during house construction and was never restored. The contractor said the connection would be repaired only if I paid Rs 22,000. Despite several written complaints to Jalkal general manager Kuldeep Singh, no action has been taken," said Jaiswal.
Another resident, Ramchandra Chaurasia from Buddheshwar, emotionally declared his intent to apply for euthanasia.
"The road built just a year ago is damaged, even as the area has been flooded with drain water for the past 15 days due to backflow. I have complained to everyone from the corporator to the municipal commissioner, but no one listens," he rued.
Chaurasia alleged that the municipal staff demanded 20 bags of gravel before initiating road repairs. "They laid a thin-layered road and left. The drain is blocked, and sewage has flooded the colony. We can't step out. There are heaps of cowdung at my doorstep," he said.
Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar, additional municipal commissioner Arun Kumar, and officials from eight zones were present at the grievance redressal camp.
Mayor Sushma Kharakwal said the Corporation received around 129 complaints and 107 were resolved on spot.
"We have directed immediate action against illegal milk dairies in Para and Buddheshwar areas. Officials are also looking into the Lalkuan water supply complaint and strict action will be taken against those found guilty," she said.
However, despite the mayor's assurances, many citizens said they have heard similar promises before, but seen no improvements on the ground....
