Bahraich, Nov. 18 -- A local court here sentenced a Chinese woman to eight years of imprisonment on Monday for illegally entering India through the Indo-Nepal border. The order was passed by the Bahraich additional sessions judge (third) Kavita Nigam. The woman was identified as Li Jin Mei alias Li Xinmei from the Shandong Province of China. Additional government counsel (crime) Pramod Kumar Singh said on December 2, 2023, a joint team of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Rupaideha police noticed a woman, with a Buddhist monk-like appearance, approaching the SSB check post near the international border. During an investigation, Mei was identified, and she reportedly produced a Chinese passport and a Nepal visa, but failed to show any valid documents permitting her entry into India. Mei was arrested and a case was registered at Rupaidiha Police Station under Section 14A of the Foreigners Act. On Monday, after hearing arguments from both sides, the court found Mei guilty of unauthorised entry into India. Upon conviction, Judge Nigam sentenced the accused to eight years of simple imprisonment and imposed a Rs.50,000 fine on her, with an additional six months' imprisonment in case the fine remains unpaid....
