chamoli locals raise concern on Temporary lake
Mussoorie, Nov. 2 -- Local residents in Chamoli district have raised concern over a temporary lake that has formed in the Tapovan area on the Dhauliganga river on the Malari route in the district. Officials have attributed the formation to debris and boulders blocking the natural flow of the river.
Officials, however, have clarified that the situation is under control. The district disaster management authority (DDMA) said a team was sent to the site to assess the development and initiate necessary measures.
"There is nothing alarming as of now. The lake has been formed due to boulders and debris obstructing the river flow. Work to remove the blockage has already begun, and the water level is receding," said NK Joshi, district disaster management (DDMO) officer, Chamoli.
While immediate risk from this particular temporary lake appears to be diminishing, experts warn that the broader threat posed by glacial lakes and the potential for glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in Uttarakhand remains high, especially during and after the monsoon and summer seasons.
Uttarakhand has previously witnessed devastation linked to such events. In 2021, a massive flash flood -- triggered by a rock and ice avalanche from the upper catchment, likely near Raunthi Peak by Reni village led to a sudden surge in water and debris in the Rishiganga river....
