Centre designates 114 immigration posts under new legal provisions
New Delhi, Sept. 4 -- The Union home ministry has notified 114 designated immigration posts across the country for facilitating entry into and exit from India. The move, announced through a Gazette notification on Monday, brings airports, seaports, land borders and rail posts under a common framework defined by the new Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.
According to the notification, 37 airports, 34 seaports, 37 land ports and six rail ports have been identified for immigration checks. The list includes major international gateways such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru airports, as well as newer facilities like the Manohar International Airport at Mopa in Goa and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh.
At the seaports, entry-exit points include Mumbai, Mundra, Cochin, Chennai, Paradeep, Vizhinjam and Tuticorin, besides strategic locations in the Northeast such as Dhubri and Pandu in Assam. The land ports cover several sensitive border points with Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar, including Attari in Punjab, Raxaul in Bihar, Moreh in Manipur, Jogbani in Bihar and Dawki in Meghalaya. Six railway ports, including Munabao in Rajasthan, Attari in Punjab, and New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, have also been designated.
Officials said the updated list consolidates and expands existing entry-exit points to align with new legal provisions under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, which replaced the earlier Foreigners Act. "The notification brings clarity for travellers, trade and border management. It also helps standardise immigration facilities across different modes of entry," a senior official in the ministry said.
Among the 114 immigration posts notified by the Centre, a handful stand out for their strategic and regional importance. The inclusion of Moreh in Manipur and Zorinpui in Mizoram underscores the government's emphasis on deepening connectivity with Southeast Asia. Both posts are key to trade and people-to-people movement along the India-Myanmar border.
In Kerala, Vizhinjam seaport has been added to the list at a time when the transshipment hub near Thiruvananthapuram is set to emerge as a major gateway for global cargo traffic. Officials said immigration facilities there will align with its expansion.
Port Blair finds place in both the airport and seaport lists, reflecting its dual role as a civilian gateway and a strategic outpost in the Bay of Bengal. Similarly, Silghat and Pandu ports in Assam, linked to inland waterways, are expected to boost riverine trade with Bangladesh.
Officials said that the notification goes beyond travel facilitation, embedding immigration infrastructure in India's security and economic strategies.
The notification said the order comes into effect immediately from its publication....
