Case filed after traffic violations and hooliganism in Meerut, 'ABVP workers' blamed
Meerut, Dec. 28 -- Following blatant traffic violations and hooliganism by car-borne youths at Begumpul in Meerut district late on Friday evening, the Sadar Bazar police have registered a case against unidentified car occupants. Later, the suspects were said to be "workers of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)".
The case was registered after videos of the incident went viral on social media. Senior police officials took action against four police personnel for negligence in night patrolling.
According to the police, a convoy passed through Begumpul on Friday evening, with occupants violating traffic norms, stepping out of moving vehicles and creating a public nuisance. The unruly behaviour led to traffic congestion in the busy area. Police personnel present at the spot attempted to stop the group, but their instructions were ignored.
The incident came to light after videos circulated widely on social media late Friday night, prompting senior officers to take cognizance. SP City Ayush Vikram Singh said that the preliminary investigation revealed the group had returned from an ABVP programme held in Delhi. While passing through Begumpul, the activists created a disturbance, endangering public safety.
Based on the video evidence, Sadar Bazar police have registered an FIR against unidentified car occupants under sections related to negligent driving, violation of traffic rules and creating a public disturbance. Efforts are underway to trace the accused with the help of the viral footage.
In fallout from the incident, SSP Vipin Tada late Friday night placed Sadar Bazar police station in-charge Vijay Rai under line attachment for failing to conduct night patrolling despite clear instructions.
Additionally, Yogipuram outpost in-charge Satish of Kankerkhera and constables Ashok, Varun and Rajeev posted at Shobhapur outpost were also attached to the police lines. The three constables have been sent to the Quick Response Team (QRT).
The SSP said all the personnel were removed for negligence in duty. He added that all station in-charges had been directed to conduct night patrols in their respective areas. However, when locations were checked on Friday night, the Sadar Bazar station in-charge was found present in his office while chaos was unfolding at Begumpul, prompting immediate action against him....
