Carpet exporters seek bailout after US tariff hike
VARANASI, Aug. 5 -- The Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) has urged the Centre to announce a bailout package for the handmade carpet industry following the imposition of an additional 25% tariff by the US, pushing the total duty burden to nearly 30%.
CEPC chairman Kuldeep Raj Wattal has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, warning of job losses, order cancellations, and shrinking market share. Over 2 million artisans in Varanasi, Bhadohi, Mirzapur, Shahjahanpur, and Srinagar depend on this craft. The letter seeks a relief package equivalent to 20% of annual US export value to protect the livelihoods and heritage of rural artisans....
