Car knocks down auto, pedestrians in Banthra; 6-yr-old dies
LUCKNOW, Feb. 13 -- A six-year-old boy died and four others were injured after a car rammed into an autorickshaw and pedestrians near Hanuman Temple in Banthra on Kanpur Road on Thursday evening, police said.
According to an official statement issued by the Lucknow police, the accident took place around 6 pm.
According to the police statement, those injured were identified as Armaan (12), son of Pape; Awadh Bihari (42), son of Durgadin; Sadhna Verma (35), wife of Sanjay Patel; Meena Devi (60), wife of Bhimshankar; and Dikshant Patel (6), son of Sanjay Patel.
All the injured were taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said Dikshant Patel was in critical condition and was referred to a higher medical facility, where he died during treatment.
Earlier accounts suggested that the car was moving at high speed and caused panic in the busy market area before fleeing the scene. However, police have so far described the vehicle as unidentified and said efforts are underway to trace it.
"A case is being registered and investigators are examining available evidence, including CCTV footage from the surrounding area, to identify the vehicle and establish the sequence of events. Further investigation is in progress," said Banthra SHO Rana Rajesh Singh to HT
According to police and eyewitnesses, the car, suspected to be a Swift Dzire, was travelling from Lucknow towards Kanpur when it first hit a motorcycle parked on the roadside.
Pramod Kumar, a resident of Sahijanpur, had parked his bike and was buying items from a nearby shop when the car struck the vehicle. As bystanders tried to catch the driver, he allegedly sped away, losing control and ploughing into pedestrians in the busy market stretch.
Police said the driver fled with the car but left behind a minor girl who was accompanying him. Locals detained her and handed her over to the police. During questioning, she reportedly identified the driver as Gaurav and told investigators that both study at a school named Awadh College....
