toronto, May 3 -- Canada has formally recognised April as Sikh Heritage Month with a bill in that connection receiving royal assent this week, meaning that it has been enacted.
The private member's bill had been moved by Sukh Dhaliwal, an Indian-Canadian MP from British Columbia, in October 2017.
After going through the Canadian parliamentary process, it was passed by the country's House of Commons, before also going through with unanimous assent through its upper house, the Senate, earlier this year.
Dhaliwal described the nationwide recognition as "an important milestone for the Sikh community in Canada".
