CAL's maiden Challenger Trophy begins on October 1
LUCKNOW, Sept. 29 -- Probably the first time, Cricket Association Lucknow (CAL) on Sunday announced its calendar for the year, promising many new events as well 1574 matches for all age categories, including the Challenger Trophy on the pattern of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Besides conducting the maiden edition of the four-day Challenger Trophy from Wednesday, at the Sports Galaxy Ground, CAL also announced the conduct of the 6th All India JKP Trophy as well as Lucknow Premier League in February.
While launching the annual calendar, CAL chief, Navneet Sehgal said that 15 top players each from Division A, B and C of the CAL leagues last season will form the three teams for the Challenger Trophy, which is also sponsored by Sports Galaxy.
"There will be a pool of 45 players for the Challenger Trophy and they will be representing Sports Galaxy XI, Akhil Infra XI and CAL President XI and all the three teams will get to play a 50-50 over league match and the final is slated to be played on October 4," he said.
Two former Ranji Trophy cricketer Ravikant Shukla, Abhinav Dixit and former Under-23 player Sufiyan Khan have been named coaches of the three teams, and a day camp of all 45 players will take place on Tuesday at the Sports Galaxy ground.
"We have decided to sponsor this trophy as it will help our local players to showcase their skills on a bigger platform in future. We have also made arrangements as per the BCCI standards, besides having a trainer Lalitendra for the teams," Tejas Mehrotra, director of Sports Galaxy said.
On the occasion, Sehgal also announced that from this year onwards, CAL has fixed certain criteria for the cricketers, who will get to play directly for the inter district events.
Favourites Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) won the 43rd All India KD Singh Babu Invitational Prize Money Men's Hockey Tournament, Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) 3-1 here on Sunday.
