LUCKNOW, Oct. 9 -- Several major intersections in the state capital have become bottlenecks as potholes and damaged roads continue to slow traffic, especially during office hours. Key stretches, such as Matiyari Crossing on Faizabad Road, G20 Marg, and a road near KKC College and Vibhuti Khand roads, are among the worst hit. At Matiyari, around 500 metres of broken road appeared right after the monsoon began in June-July. "A constant flow of heavy vehicles and lack of maintenance have caused the bitumen layer to erode, forcing vehicles to crawl through the junction," said Ramesh Chaudhary, a shopkeeper in the area. "Every day we spend an extra 20-30 minutes stuck in traffic. Authorities fix the surface temporarily, but the repair wears out within weeks," said Pawan Tiwari, a daily commuter. Similar conditions prevail on G20 Marg, where uneven surfaces and waterlogging after rains have damaged portions of the newly laid road. Near KKC college, broken patches pose a daily risk to two-wheeler riders. At Vibhuti Khand, big potholes on the stretch from Vibhuti Khand police station to Summit Building and roads leading to the Gomti Nagar railway station have surfaced. Commuters say repeated complaints to Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) and the public works department (PWD) have brought little action. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Kamesh Dixit admitted: "The broken roads are posing a major problem as they slow down traffic. We have written to the concerned department to repair them as soon as possible so that traffic can be managed well," he added....
