Bowlers knit UP's biggest-ever win at Green Park
LUCKNOW, Nov. 11 -- Shivam Mavi and Shivam Sharma excelled on Monday when the hosts and defending champions Uttar Pradesh notched up their maiden win in the new domestic season of the Ranji Trophy, outplaying Nagaland by an innings and 265 runs in their Elite Group A encounter in Kanpur.
The win remains the biggest-ever for Uttar Pradesh at the Green Park Stadium in Ranji Trophy. The previous biggest win at this venue was in November 2018 when UP defeated Goa by an innings and 247 runs. However, UP's biggest-ever win in the history of Ranji Trophy was against Tripura at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium here also in 2018 when the hosts won the match by an innings and 384 runs.
Mavi, who hammered his maiden first-class century and took two crucial wickets on Sunday, continued his fine run on the penultimate day of the four-day encounter, completing his season's first five-wicket haul to get Nagaland out for 117 in the first innings after Uttar Pradesh declared their first innings at 535/6.
Thereafter, it was left-arm orthodox spinner Shivam Sharma, who too claimed his maiden five-wicket haul of the season to get Nagaland out for 153 in 51.1 overs after forcing the rivals for a follow-on, at the Green Park Stadium.
Resuming the overnight score of 77/4 in their first innings, Nagaland never got the going easy as wickets kept tumbling like nine pins with Shivam Sharma removing the overnight batter Chetan Bist (7) after the visitors could add just two runs to their overnight total. Other overnight batter Nischal D (47, 76b, 7x4) too departed soon after being caught by Priyam Garg off Mavi,
There was no stopping then as Mavi removed Yodanghar (0) and Imliwati (0) in quick succession after Aauib Khan had the wicket of skipper R Jonathan (4), and then Kunal Tyagi and Shivam Sharma tagged the remaining two wickets to bring down the curtains for Nagaland in the first innings in 45.3 overs.
Things didn't change much for Nagaland in the second innings, too. After losing opener Sedezhalie (15), who was caught by substitute Aditya Sharma off part-timer Karan Sharma, they lost wickets at regular intervals before being bundled out for 153 in 51.1 overs.
Though Nishal D (23, 75b, 3x4), Chetan Bist (53, 98b, 3x4, 1x6), Yugandhar (15, 51b, 1x4), Imliwati (18, 19b, 2x4( and Ronit More (12*, 9b, 2x4) tried their best to avoid crushing, to no avail as Uttar Pradesh bowlers, especially Shivam Sharma ripped through the Nagaland innings with 5/25. He was well supported by Delhi-boy Karan Sharma (3/72) and Aaquib Khan (2/12).
In fact, Uttar Pradesh needed such a win, especially after splitting points with Baroda in their first away encounter when not a single ball could be bowled due to the bad outfield.
The win, however, helped Uttar Pradesh attain the third position in the table with 14 points. Jharkhand and Andhra with 15 points each are at the first and second position. Uttar Pradesh now play their last league match of the first phase of the event against hosts Tamil Nadu at Coimbatore from November 16 to 19.
In the second phase of the Ranji Trophy, Uttar Pradesh will play their last league match on home turf against Jharkhand at Meerut from January 22 to 25. Their final league match will be against hosts Vidarbha at Nagpur from January 29 to February 1....
