Bomb threat email sparks evacuation,search at passport office
MEERUT, March 28 -- A bomb threat emailed to the passport office in Bareilly district's Pradarshini Nagar on Friday morning triggered panic and prompted the evacuation of the building, leading to a large-scale security operation. According to officials, the threat was received around 11:15 am on the office's official email ID. The message warned that the passport office would be blown up by 2pm using a "poisonous bomb".
Passport officials immediately alerted the police, following which senior officers and security personnel rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. As a precautionary measure, the entire four-storey building housing the passport office was evacuated. A Union Bank branch and several shops on the ground floor were also cleared.
Bomb disposal and dog squads carried out an intensive search of the premises. Every section of the building was thoroughly checked to rule out the presence of any explosive material, officials said. The sudden evacuation and heavy police deployment caused panic among applicants and staff present there.
Passport officer Shailendra Singh said the email mentioned a timed explosion, adding to the seriousness of the threat. No suspicious object or explosive was found. The Anti-Terrorism Squad has taken over the investigation to trace the origin of the email and identify those responsible....
