Agra, Oct. 7 -- The body of a wanted criminal, who was shot dead in a police encounter after he fled police custody on Sunday, was handed over to his family after post-mortem, Firozabad police said on Monday. Naresh alias Bhoori, who was said to have masterminded the loot of Rs 2 crore from a cash van in the Makhanpur police station area of Firozabad on September 30, was among the six gang members arrested in the case on Saturday. On Sunday, he escaped police on the pretext of answering nature's call during a cash recovery operation. The encounter broke out when Naresh allegedly fired at police near the Halpura underpass in the Banipur forest region. A bullet hit the bulletproof jacket of an additional superintendent of police while the station officer of Ramgarh sustained injuries in the firing, police had said. Naresh was shot in retaliatory firing by police. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries, they said. On Saturday, Firozabad SSP Saurabh Dixit announced the recovery of over Rs.1 crore, along with illegal arms, receipts of iPhone and motorcycle purchases, and other incriminating material. Three of the accused, including Naresh, carried rewards of Rs.25,000 each. The DIG Agra Range had hiked the reward on Naresh to Rs.50,000.
