VARANASI, Dec. 11 -- The body of a man accused of attacking a 20-year-old woman in the Katra locality of Mirzapur district on December 5 was found floating in the Ganga river on Tuesday evening, police said. According to officials, the accused had allegedly barged into the woman's house in the Katra Kotwali area and attacked her with a blade, inflicting an injury to her throat. Around 4 pm on Tuesday, boatmen spotted a body drifting in the Ganga behind the old building of Maharshi Dayanand Girls Inter College in Raidani Colony under the City Kotwali area and alerted the police. A police team reached the spot and retrieved the body, which was later taken for an autopsy. Family members subsequently identified the body as that of accused, a resident of Quresh Nagar. Senior Superintendent of Police Somen Verma confirmed that the body recovered from the Ganga was that of the accused. "Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide. The body was bloated, suggesting he may have jumped into the river on the day of the incident. The exact cause of death will be confirmed in the post-mortem report," he said. Earlier, on the night of December 5, a 20-year-old woman sustained a throat injury after being attacked with a sharp-edged blade at her home in the Katra area of Mirzapur. She was alone at the time of the incident. Senior officers rushed to the scene immediately after receiving information. The victim was taken to the district hospital, where doctors initially declared her condition stable. She was later referred to Varanasi for further treatment.
