Lucknow, July 28 -- In a novel initiative to boost river tourism and empower local communities, the Uttar Pradesh government is training traditional boatmen along the Ganga to become storytellers, safety marshals, and cultural ambassadors. The training, conducted by Manyawar Kanshiram Institute of Tourism Management (MKITM), is underway in Chunar and Mirzapur. Boatmen are being equipped with life-saving skills by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and learning modules on guest interaction, heritage storytelling, and etiquette. "This initiative gives dignity and opportunity to people long tied to our river heritage," said an MKITM official. Minister Jaiveer Singh added that it aligns with the vision of eco-sensitive, community-led tourism. Boatman Ramesh Yadav, after completing the training, said he now feels confident to guide and protect tourists.
