BJP weakened RTI Act: UP Congresspresident
LUCKNOW, Oct. 13 -- Uttar Pradesh Congress on Sunday accused the ruling party of weakening the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005.
Addressing a press conference here on the 20th anniversary of the Act's implementation, state Congress' media cell chairman CP Rai said: "The then UPA government enacted the Right to Information Act on this day in 2005. The Act was designed to be so powerful and transparent that the public could use this law to obtain any information from anywhere in the country."
"The BJP weakened the Act. The 2019 amendments weakened the autonomy of information commissions. Previously, the tenure of commissioners was fixed for five years and their service conditions were secure."
"The amendments empowered the Centre to determine their tenure and service conditions, thus affecting independence and increasing executive influence," Rai alleged....
