BJP to ask party MLA whether he made '10% commission' remark
Kanpur, Sept. 14 -- A Bharatiya Janata Party leader has said the party will ask its Kidwai Nagar MLA Mahesh Trivedi about the veracity of his remark following the circulation of a video in which he purportedly claimed that a "10 per cent commission" from development funds was the norm.
Speaking to reporters in Kanpur on Saturday, BJP state general secretary Anup Gupta said the party would ascertain the veracity of the remark.
"Something has gone viral on social media. The party will ask the legislator about the matter and investigate whether he actually said it and in what context," Gupta said.
On the broader issue of corruption, Gupta said that he himself, as a member of the legislative council, recognised that malpractices had persisted. However, he maintained that recent advances in digitisation had enhanced transparency.
"The scope for commissions and corruption has reduced. I do not believe many people give credence to such discussions," he said, while adding that it was ultimately a matter for thorough scrutiny.
Commenting on the death of a BJP worker in police custody in Ghazipur, Gupta described the incident as "unfortunate" and stressed the need for police to adopt a more citizen-friendly approach.
"Whether it is a collector selected through the public service commission or any other officer, they all draw their salaries from public taxes. Every official is accountable to the people. If any officer behaves irresponsibly, action must follow," he said....
