Dehradun, Aug. 24 -- The Uttarakhand Congress on Saturday staged a protest in Dehradun alleging that the BJP was trying to shield a Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader arrested for allegedly abetting a 32-year-old man's death by suicide in Pauri Garhwal. Himanshu Chamoli, state secretary of the BJYM, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly exerting pressure on the victim over a property-related monetary dispute. State Congress president Karan Mahara, while addressing the press conference on Saturday, said, "The BJP wants to create an impression that they will bring the culprits to justice. The reality is quite contrary. Police first registered an FIR on the complaint of the deceased's father, naming Chamoli and others. Later, under political pressure, they registered another FIR under the Arms Act on their own complaint. It is for the first time that two FIRs have been registered for the same case. This shows an attempt to save Chamoli," he alleged. According to police, the deceased purportedly uploaded a video on social media at around 4am on Thursday, claiming he was taking the extreme step due to harassment from the leader. HT has seen the video. Hours later, he was found dead at a secluded spot in the district. A case was registered against Chamoli and four others under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Pauri Garhwal police station on Thursday. Later, police registered another FIR under the Arms Act against two people over the "illegal use" of a licensed gun with which the victim shot himself. Pauri Garhwal SSP Lokeshwar clarified, "We registered the second FIR because the licensed weapon in the name of an ITBP jawan was used in violation of the Arms Act. This will strengthen our case in the main offence before the court." Uttarakhand BJYM president Shashank Rawat on Saturday refuted the Congress' allegations and said Chamoli was arrested immediately by the police and was also relieved of his post....
