BJP MLA seeks urgent legal reforms for deportation of illegal immigrants
LUCKNOW, June 12 -- In a letter to Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Sarojini Nagar MLA Rajeshwar Singh has demanded urgent legal reforms to enable the fast-track deportation of "over two crore illegal immigrants" currently residing in India.
Citing ministry of home affairs data, the BJP MLA noted that the number of illegal immigrants, primarily from Bangladesh and Myanmar, surged from one crore in 1997 to over two crore by 2016, while the 2025 figures could be significantly higher.
Despite this alarming rise, deportations remain minimal due to legal loopholes, procedural delays, and misuse of constitutional protections like Article 21, he noted.
Terming it a "silent invasion", the BJP MLA emphasised national security, economic, and cultural threats posed by unchecked infiltration.
He proposed a six-point reform blueprint, which includes amending the Foreigners Act to empower district magistrates, creating fast-track immigration tribunals, establishing a centralised NRC-integrated identification system, building dedicated detention centres, and enacting a unified National Immigration Control Act.
