BJP in damage control mode as allies announce to go it alone
Lucknow, May 27 -- A year is left in the three-tier panchayat election in Uttar Pradesh but rumblings have begun in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The BJP allies - Apna Dal (S), Nishad Party and Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) have announced plans to contest the panchayat election on their own strength.
The opposition parties, SP and Congress, launched an attack on the BJP terming the decision of the allies to go solo in the panchayat election as a fissure in the NDA before the 2027 assembly election. Soon the BJP leadership moved into damage control mode. Deputy chief minister, Keshav Prasad Maurya, said that there has been no talk with the NDA allies over the panchayat election. There has been no discussion in the BJP if the NDA allies will contest the panchayat election on their own strength or under alliance formula. Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh said, there is no difference in the NDA alliance. The panchayat election is likely to be held next year, "we will discuss the alliance formula before the poll," he said. The party has directed leaders and office-bearers to strengthen the organisation from the booth level to the district unit before the panchayat election. The Apna Dal (S) will contest the election with full force, she said and asked the cadre to gear up for the 2027 assembly election.
Following the footsteps of Apna Dal (S), Nishad party president and UP fisheries minister, Sanjay Nishad, on Sunday announced that his party will go solo in the panchayat election.
The Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) general secretary, Arun Rajbhar, too announced that his party will go solo in the panchayat election. The SBSP has started preparations for the panchayat election by holding meetings in the areas of East and Central UP dominated by the party, he said. Addressing party workers in Sultanpur on Monday, SBSP chief and UP Panchayati Raj minister, Om Prakash Rajbhar, said the SBSP will contest the panchayat election on its own strength. "If we contest the election with BJP we will be allotted fewer seats," he said.
