KANPUR, Aug. 1 -- A biker died after falling off a 30-ft-high bridge when his two-wheeler was struck by a speeding SUV late on Wednesday night in Unnao district. The vehicle, which bore a BJP flag and a VIP pass, was registered in the name of Saroj Kureel, BJP MLA from Ghatampur, Kanpur. The accident took place barely 200 metres from the office of superintendent of police on the Hardoi bypass overbridge. According to eyewitnesses, the SUV first rammed into an e-rickshaw ferrying multiple passengers, then struck another car and finally collided with a motorcycle. The biker, Nikhil Gupta, a relative of a local BJP leader, was thrown over the bridge railing and fell to the service road below. He died on the spot. At least four passengers from the e-rickshaw sustained injuries in the collision. Eyewitnesses claimed they lay in pain for nearly 40 minutes before any ambulance arrived, despite multiple calls to emergency services. Eventually, locals arranged to transport the injured to the district hospital. SP (Unnao) Deepak Bhuker said the police recovered the SUV from the accident site and found liquor bottles and beer cans inside. "It seems the driver was under the influence of alcohol...we have registered a case and further investigations are underway." The vehicle was said to have been driven by one Manish, who fled the scene following the accident. Authorities have since filed an FIR against him as well as the registered vehicle owner. The exact nature of the driver's connection to the MLA remains under investigation. On Thursday night, BJP MLA Saroj Kureel issued a statement acknowledging that the SUV involved in the accident was registered in her name. "I had sent the vehicle to Kanpur to fetch medicine for my mother, as I was in Lucknow at the time," she said. Expressing grief over the incident, she added: "My heart goes out to the family that lost its son. I stand with them in this difficult time and will fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation."...
