Bijnor woman seeks euthanasia for self, kin
MEERUT, July 2 -- Alleging that two local moneylenders fraudulently got her family's home transferred to their names, a woman from Dhampur in Uttar Pradesh's Bijnor district claims to have written to the President of India seeking permission for euthanasia (intentionally ending life to eliminate pain and suffering) for herself, her husband and their three children.
The woman, Rukmini Devi, a resident of Durga Vihar Colony, also alleges in her letter dated June 28 that facing repeated threats and violence, her family has no option but to die with dignity.
It all began during the Covid-19 pandemic when Rukmini's husband Ramkumar Prajapati fell ill and the family's financial condition saw a slump. As per Rukmini's letter, the family borrowed Rs.11 lakh from two moneylenders. She alleges that under the pretext of a loan agreement, the lenders deceitfully got the ownership of their home transferred to their names.
On June 20, the accused allegedly arrived at their home with 20 to 25 goons. Rukmini alleges that the group cut through the main gate using a gas cutter, forcibly entered the house, assaulted family members, and vandalised CCTV cameras installed outside the house. She further alleges that the assailants looted important documents and jewellery worth around Rs.4 lakh.
Despite lodging a complaint with local police, Rukmini alleges that no concrete action was taken. With the accused allegedly threatening to kill the family if they did not vacate the house, she wrote to the President.
The issue intensified when her husband Ramkumar threatened to set himself on fire in protest. In response, police arrested Ramkumar and their son Shivam on Monday, booking them under charges of disturbing public peace. Both were produced before the SDM court, which sent them to jail. htc...
