VARANASI, June 29 -- Banaras Hindu University has introduced RFID-enabled smart ID cards as part of a pilot project at the Sayaji Rao Gaekwad Central Library. This technology aims to streamline and simplify the process of issuing and returning books, making it quicker and more transparent. With RFID, students can easily check book availability and locate titles within specific sections of the library. The smart cards also enable digitised entry and attendance tracking at the library. Dr DK Singh, librarian at Banaras Hindu University, stated that BHU is likely the first institution in the country to adopt RFID technology in a library with such an extensive and diverse collection. The Sayaji Rao Gaekwad Central Library currently holds over 1.6 million books, millions of periodicals, 13,795 journals, and 12,556 rare manuscripts, serving nearly 36,000 users-including students, researchers, faculty, and staff. Dr Singh added that the RFID-enabled smart card system will gradually be extended to other university institutes, faculties, colleges, and departmental libraries. Once fully implemented, the system is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of managing and monitoring library resources.
