VARANASI, Sept. 4 -- Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has launched a new initiative to enhance women's safety on campus by integrating a security feature into its mobile application, Namaste BHU. This new feature enables swift response and assistance during security emergencies. The feature was launched by vice-chancellor Prof Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi at Mahila Mahavidyalaya on Wednesday, in the presence of senior university officials. In its first phase, the feature is available exclusively for female students and will function within the geographical boundaries of the BHU campus. In case of an emergency, pressing the safety button in the app will immediately trigger an alert in the Proctorial Board's control room. Along with the alert, the user's personal details and live location will be transmitted automatically, enabling a prompt and targeted response. Prof Chaturvedi emphasised that while much remains to be done to improve campus security, this feature marks an important step forward. He expressed hope that the new initiative would instill a greater sense of confidence within the BHU community. He added that the system works via the cellular network, and the location shared would be accurate enough to guide patrolling teams quickly. He encouraged students to use the feature whenever they feel unsafe. Based on user feedback, the feature will be updated and improved over time. "We have different versions of every software, and they evolve based on experience and feedback. This security alert feature will also undergo updates," the VC said. He also mentioned that, depending on the outcomes, BHU would be willing to share the model with other universities across the country. HTC...
