Before first polls in 20 years, Lucknow cricket in identity crisis
LUCKNOW, July 24 -- Is it a society or a private company? This confusion shrouds Cricket Association Lucknow (CAL) ahead of its much-awaited elections, which are taking place for the first time since 2005.
"Everyone is confused about the actual identity of CAL. It's difficult to understand whether it's a company or a society," said Sameer Mishra, a former treasurer and a candidate for the vice-president's post.
CAL, which is registered under the Societies Registration Act, was converted into a private limited company in 2017. Since then, this is the first time that CAL will be holding its annual general meeting (AGM) on Saturday. All 156 members are expected to attend it.
In the meeting, CAL's general house will take a call on whether to hold the elections through ballot or a raise of hands, as the CAL's constitution allows both.
One of the joint secretaries and a candidate for the post of secretary, Arshi Raza on Wednesday demanded the cancellation of the nomination of present secretary KM Khan. He reasoned that being a member of Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association's Apex Council, Khan shouldn't fight the election as the UPCA constitution said "one man, one post".
"Khalik's nomination should also be cancelled as he has filed his papers for the post of honorary secretary, whereas such a post does not exist in the electoral process," states Raza, adding, "I have written to all concerned in UPCA and demanded immediate expulsion of Khalik from the Apex Council."
Meanwhile, Abhijeet Sarkar, Vinay Mohan and Viraj Sagar Das Gupta have all been elected vice-president unopposed, along with Abhijeet Sinha as public relations officer. On Wednesday, there were 36 individuals in the fray for several posts after withdrawals. Those who withdrew are Sushil Singh Samar, Chandan Malik, Santosh Singh, Yash Sahani, Rahul Saxena, Divya Nautiyal and Rakesh Singh.
Now for the post of president, along with retired IAS Navneet Sehgal, three others are in the fray-Neeraj Jain, Lallan Kumar and Haider Raza. Anil Chaudhary, Sujay Kumar Tripathi and Sameer Mishra are in the contest for the post of senior vice-president. Besides KM Khan and Arshi Raza, former secretary Gopal Singh is also in the fray for the secretary's election.
However, given the situation, both Sehgal and Khan are expecting a "no-contest" in the polls. Thursday will give a clear picture of the final set of candidates as the CAL elections are happening after almost 20 years.
Both camps on Wednesday appealed for votes and promised for the betterment of Lucknow Cricket, but many believe that things won't change much, as it would be just the shifting of powers, if anything.
"Making tall promises for the betterment of Lucknow Cricket is just an eye wash, as nothing has changed in the last 20 years. So, expecting any earth-shattering changes is unreal," said a senior cricketer on condition of anonymity....
