LUCKNOW, June 21 -- A 25-year-old assistant accountant at Babu Banarasi Das University (BBD ) was arrested for embezzling a student's semester fee by issuing a fake RTGS receipt instead of depositing the amount with the college. "The accused, Anupam Shukla, a resident of Bharatipuram Colony in Tiwariganj, was arrested on Thursday by a police team from BBD police station. Acting on a tip-off, police apprehended him near the Juggaur railway bridge under the BBD police station limits," said DCP Crime Kamlesh Dixit. He further said that the matter came to light after a student, Aman Singh, a Basti resident, submitted a written complaint at BBD police station alleging that he had paid Rs.60,000 in cash to Anupam Shukla as his semester fee on May 21, 2025. "Instead of issuing a proper cash receipt, the accused provided a fake RTGS/NEFT receipt. The fraud was exposed when the college later informed that my fee was still unpaid," said the victim to police in his complaint. "Following the complaint, an FIR under IPC Sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), and 471 (using a forged document as genuine) was registered against Shukla," the DCP added. Police officials said the accused had been working at the college in an administrative role and may have used his position to cheat multiple students. Further probe is underway to determine if there are more victims. The BBDU spokesperson Kamil Rizvi said that matter came to management's knowledge after which the FIR was lodged at BBD police station. "Shockinlgy the man gave the RTGS/NEFT receipt even when the students paid in cash. The students in hurry never noticed the scam." "We fear over 80 students have been duped by the man and we also fear this involved some of the former students as this can't be done alone. We have formed an internal committee which is checking the technical records."...
