Batters fail on home turf, UP concede lead in Nayudu Trophy
LUCKNOW, Oct. 28 -- Hosts and former champions Uttar Pradesh on Monday failed to make use of the home advantage and conceded a 20-run first innings lead to visitors Karnataka on the second day of their four-day Elite Group D encounter of the Under-23 Col CK Nayudu Trophy in Meerut.
Chasing Karnataka's first innings score of 235, Uttar Pradesh despite having control on mid session of the Day Two, got out for 215 in 83.1 overs. Karnataka were 50/2 in their second innings, stretching their overall lead to 70 runs at the draw of stumps on Monday.
In fact, it was a complete batting failure of Sameer Rizvi-led Uttar Pradesh after resuming at the overnight score of 53/0 on Monday morning as none of the batters could handle the situation well on the home turf of the Victoria Park.
Both overnight batters Mohd Aashiyan and Swastik Chikara could add two and six runs, respectively to their last night total before being departed in quick succession. Aashiyan edged a regulation catch to keeper Harshit Dharmani off Dhanush Gowda in the third over of the day after scoring 48-ball 27 with the help of four boundaries, whereas Chikara (27, 47b, 4x4) too departed in a similar fashion off the same bowler in his next over.
Experienced Rituraj Sharma and along with Rizvi tried to adorn the innings, stitching together 76 runs for third wicket, but in vain as Rizvi (36, 64b, 2x4, 1x6) was caught by Jasper EJ off Shashi Kumar K, whereas Sharma (48, 120b, 6x4, 1x6) was trapped in front of the wicket also by Shashi Kumar.
In fact, the departure of these two allowed Karnataka bowlers to dictate terms as Uttar Pradesh started losing wickets on regular intervals. Mohd Amaan (21, 73b, 1x4) was bowled by Shashi Kumar, whereas Adarsh Singh gave a simple catch to Prakar Chaturvedi off the same bowler on duck.
As expected, keeper-batter Akshay Dubey, who has been a consistent failure in Uttar Pradesh cricket, once again found struggling against Karnataka bowlers and was caught by Karthikeya off Hardik Raj after scoring just 42-ball 13. Shubham Mishra (17) and Kartik Yadav (12*) too couldn't do much, whereas Vijay Kumar and Naman Tiwari failed to open account before being sent back to pavilion.
Off-break bowler Shashi Kumar finished with season best 6/56, whereas Hardik Raj bagged 3/79.
In the second innings, left-arm orthodox spinner Shubham Mishra raised UP's comeback hopes, getting both the openers Jasper EJ (13) and Prakar Chaturvedi (0) early in the innings, but skipper Aneesahwar Gautam (32, 43b, 6x4) and Karthikeya KP (5) then batted patienlty and denied and further damage to team on Monday....
