Batters fail again, UP lose to Goa in Cooch Behar Trophy
LUCKNOW, Dec. 4 -- Former champions Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday tasted their first loss in the season after being beaten by hosts Goa by seven wickets on the penultimate day of their four-day Elite Group D encounter of the Cooch Behar Trophy in Goa.
After scoring just 125 in their first innings, Uttar Pradesh could score 207 in 86.1 overs in their second innings, stretching their overall lead to 43, which Goa achieved in just 10 overs, losing three wickets on Wednesday. Goa scored 289 runs in their first innings.
Resuming at the overnight score of 3/54, Uttar Pradesh batters specially skipper Bhavy Goyal, Kaif Rehman and Aditya Kumar Singh tried their best to put up a big score, but they didn't get adequate support from the other end.
Goyal and Rehman stitched together 106 runs for the fourth wicket and raised some hopes, but to no avail as Goa bowlers, especially spinner Mihir Kudalkar didn't allow Uttar Pradesh batters to settle, bagging 3/40. He was well supported by Samarth (2/27) and Chigurupati Venkata (2/26).
Before being bowled by Samarth, stylish Goyal struck the highest 61, which came off 164 balls with the help of five hits to the fence. Kaif's 129-ball 56 was studded with six boundaries, whereas Singh remained unbeaten on 42 in 78 balls, containing four boundaries and two sixes.
It turned out to be just a formality for Goa in the second innings as opener Aaditya RK (22) and skipper Yash Kasvankar (15*) ensured an easy win. However, the win took Goa to the top of the table with 20 points, followed by Bengal with 14 points and Uttar Pradesh with 13 points. Uttar Pradesh still have a chance to make it to the knockout round, but for that they need to win their remaining two matches, including the match against Assam from December 8 and against Bengal on the home turf in Bareilly from December 16.
For former champions Uttar Pradesh, it's going to be a crucial tie when they take on a spirited Chandigarh in an Elite Group B encounter of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday.
After notching back-to-back wins in the first two games this season, Uttar Pradesh lost back-to-back games to Madhya Pradesh and Hyderabad, and slipped to fourth position in the group with just eight points. Now, a further loss will dash all their hopes of making it to the knockout round.
It was quite disappointing for Rinku Singh on Wednesday after he missed out a place in the Team India for the upcoming T20 home series against South Africa, but at the same time, it was a big gain for Uttar Pradesh as now the batter will remain available for the side in the remaining three matches.
In the four matches of SMAT so far, left-hander Rinku has scored just 84, including a half-century and a dip in form is being viewed as one of the reasons behind his dropping. Opener Aryan Juyal has so far done well with 171 runs, including an unbeaten 93, but other batters in the side have yet to show their mark.
Team India discard Bhuvneshwar Kumar is yet to show his class as so far he has taken four wickets in four matches, but spinners like Vipraj Nigam and Prashant Veer with nine and seven wickets have been quite impressive....
