LUCKNOW, Sept. 27 -- A Bahraich court convicted two individuals under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act on September 23. Terming it a milestone in its fight against drug trafficking, officials of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Lucknow Zonal, said the additional sessions judge sentenced the duo to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI), according to a press note shared by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday. Officials said the two convicts -- Gyan Chand and Tilak Sunar -- were also fined Rs.2 lakh each for smuggling 31.37 kg of charas. The case dates back to March 11, 2020, when NCB officials intercepted a vehicle near the Indo-Nepal border at Rupaidiah in Bahraich based on intelligence inputs. The vehicle, bearing a Haryana registration number, and the high-value contraband were seized. "After a thorough investigation and trial, the court delivered its verdict, marking a major success for the NCB's efforts to dismantle drug syndicates operating across international borders. The conviction highlights the agency's strategic focus on cross-border narcotics interdiction and its commitment to safeguarding youth and society from drug abuse," a senior official said....
