Meerut, Sept. 26 -- Azad Samaj Party (ASP) president and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad on Friday visited the district jail in Meerut, where he met party's national general secretary Ravindra Bhati and 16 other Gurjar leaders arrested after the Dadri Mahapanchayat. Coming out of jail, Azad launched a sharp attack on the Uttar Pradesh government and administration, accusing them of jailing innocent people who were fighting for the dignity of their community icons. Azad said he had received threats from a senior officer warning him of conviction in pending court cases if he continued raising the Gurjar cause. "If I were a minister, I would have freed my brothers from jail. Today, a senior officer threatened me over the phone, saying if I fight too much for the Gurjars, I will be punished in the court cases against me. But I am not afraid of such threats," he said. On September 21, the Gurjar community had convened a Mahapanchayat in Mandoura, Dadri, attended by leaders from Meerut, Saharanpur, Noida, Muzaffarnagar, and other districts of western UP. The agenda included community rights and political representation. However, as soon as the event began, police intervened, lathi-charged participants, and made arrests. Angered, the crowd pelted stones at the police before the situation was brought under control. In total, 22 people were detained. While five were released, 17-including ASP national general secretary Ravindra Bhati-were sent to jail. He warned that if all innocent people were not released within a week, the ASP would launch a statewide agitation. Azad accused the government of suppressing the Gurjar community's voice.
