LUCKNOW, Aug. 21 -- Lucknow Police on Wednesday arrested two men who allegedly carried out multiple thefts in the area, recovering a cache of stolen gold and silver ornaments, cash, clothes and the auto-rickshaw used in their crimes. "They roamed around Indira Nagar during the day in the auto, pretending to look for passengers but actually scouting for locked houses. At night, they returned to these houses, broke open doors and lockers using chisels and iron rods, and stole valuables," said DCP East Shashank Singh. "By day, they appeared like ordinary men trying to make ends meet - one driving an auto, the other working as a labourer. By night, they turned into burglars, prowling the deserted streets of Indira Nagar and breaking into locked houses," added ACP Ghazipur Anindya Vikram Singh. The accused, Ravindra Singh, 37, and Raju Kashyap, 29, were childhood acquaintances who reconnected in Lucknow and hatched a plan to make easy money. Police said Ravindra rented an auto-rickshaw and used it both as cover and as a tool for their crimes. The arrests came after police linked two major theft cases, one on July 7 and another on August 18, in which jewellery, cash and ancestral silverware were stolen. CCTV footage from the area showed an auto near the crime scenes, providing the first major lead. "With the help of surveillance footage and manual intelligence, police traced the auto and apprehended the duo near Khurramnagar on Picnic Spot Road," said the DCP. Police recovered a large quantity of gold and silver jewellery, sarees, a school bag, Rs.2,870 in cash, house-breaking tools, and the auto used in the crimes. "They led a double life, earning some income from driving and labour, but relying mainly on thefts," said an officer. "Police are now probing whether they were involved in more burglaries or had accomplices," said ADCP East Pankaj Singh....
