PRAYAGRAJ, Nov. 27 -- Allahabad University (AU) proctor Prof Rakesh Singh has resigned reportedly after taking exception to remarks made by police commissioner Jogendra Kumar during a joint meeting of university, district, and police officials on Tuesday. The meeting was held against the backdrop of a student protest that began on November 20 over the suspension of four students. Although the protest ended after their unconditional reinstatement, the proctor's resignation has added a fresh twist. In his resignation letter, Prof Singh said the commissioner's personal comments-made in the presence of Vice-Chancellor Prof Sangita Srivastava and other officials-targeted his personality and were based on claims by non-students with past disciplinary issues. He added that he had expected support from university authorities but felt let down, leaving him with no choice but to step down to protect his self-respect. He clarified that while he is compassionate as a teacher, the proctor's role requires strictness, and he was uncomfortable with his conduct being questioned publicly.
