Assault accused shot in leg during police encounter in Pratapgarh
PRAYAGRAJ, June 7 -- A man accused of attacking another man over a loan dispute was injured in a police encounter late Thursday night near Lochanapur ground under Baghrai police station area of Pratapgarh. He was shot in the leg during an exchange of fire with police.
The injured accused, identified as Virendra Yadav, a resident of Koraari Girdharshah in Amethi, was sent to the Community Health Centre (CHC), Baghrai for treatment. Police recovered a country made .315 bore pistol and a car used in the crime. Four of his companions managed to flee. According to police, the incident started with a dispute over a loan of Rs.5,000. On March 5, 2024, Pintu Saroj ,30, of Annawan, had given the money to his relative, Sunil of Baghrai Trilokpur.
On Thursday evening, Sunil called Pintu to the Annawan intersection, saying he would return the money. Sunil arrived in a car with several others. Instead of repaying the loan, they got into a heated argument with Pintu. During the scuffle, one of the men pointed a pistol at Pintu. As Pintu tried to escape, he was shot and injured near Saresham village.
Following the incident, Maheshganj and Baghrai police launched a search for the suspects. Later that night, police signalled a suspicious car to stop near Lochanapur ground. The people in the car opened fire on the police. In retaliatory firing, one man was injured and arrested. The rest escaped....
