Aryan, Rinku hit centuries, Zeeshan dazzles with leg spin
LUCKNOW, Dec. 27 -- For yet another time, captain Rinku Singh led from the front, struck his second List A century to help former champions Uttar Pradesh score a comprehensive 228-run win over Chandigarh in their Elite Group B encounter of the Vijay Hazare Trophy at Rajkot on Friday.
Rinku, who struck 67 against Hyderabad in the first match on Wednesday, once again showed his class as a top finisher, scoring an unbeaten 106 in 60 balls with the help of 11 boundaries and four sixes to guide Uttar Pradesh post a huge 367/4. In reply, Chandigarh were bundled out for 140 in 29.3 overs with leg spin duo of Zeeshan Ansari and Vipraj Nigam, picking up six wickets between them.
Besides Rinku, former captain and India under-19 batter Aryan Juyal too came up with a classy century and helped Uttar Pradesh post a huge total on board after being sent to bat first. The right-hand batter, who too had a fine run against Hyderabad in the first match by scoring 80, on Friday hammered 118-ball 134 with the help of seven boundaries and eight sixes.
Even after losing opener Abhishek Goswami (1) in the third over, Uttar Pradesh batters especially Aryan Juyal and keeper-batter Dhruv Jurel looked well settled, stitching together 96 runs for the second wicket. Jurel, before being caught by keeper Tushar Josjhi off Nishunk Birla, scored 67 in 57 balls with the help of 11 boundaries.
Young Sameer Rizvi too made his presence felt in style with 46-ball 32, which contained three hits to the fence, and added 71 runs for the third wicket also before being caught by Joshi off Taranpreet Singh. But thereafter, Rinku and Juyal shouldered the run-scoring responsibility well, adding 134 runs for the fourth wicket. Prashant Veer (12) remained unbeaten.
For Chandigarh, Taranpreet Singh took 2/74, whereas Sandeep Sharma and Nishunk Birla shared two wickets between them.
Chandigarh too lost opener Arslan Khan (0) on the very fourth ball of the innings as Jurel took a straight catch behind the stumpff Kartik Tyagi. Skipper Manan Vohra tried to steady the innings with Arjun Azad (11), but to no avail as Chandigarh kept losing wickets on regular intervals before being reduced to 3/47 in 6.1 overs.
Vohra struck the highest 32, which came off 20 balls with help of four boundaries and two sixes before being castled by Prashant Veer. Taranpreet Singh (24, 28b, 3x4) was the other main run getter as Chandigarh batters struggled before leg spin duo of Zeeshan Ansari and Vipraj Nigam.
It was yet another fine show by Lucknow's Ansari, who didn't get even a single game to play this season in Ranji Trophy as well as Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy despite having a good run in the UPT20 League. But skipper Rinku showed faith in him and he lived up to the expectations with 4/29, whereas Nigam bagged 2/35.
Now, with eight points in two matches, table topper Uttar Pradesh meet Baroda on Monday....
