Arrested theft accused dies, kin allege assault in custody
Lucknow, Dec. 28 -- After a 29-year-old man arrested on theft charges died on Friday, his family on Saturday alleged that he was brutally assaulted in custody. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Ashiana police station in the state capital. His family has accused the police of concealing his detention and denying him medical treatment.
Police officials, who did not wish to be named, claimed the death took place in the jail hence, they will not be able to comment on it. Sources in the police said that post-mortem conducted could not ascertain the cause of death and his viscera was preserved for further examination. The deceased was identified as Mithun Kumar of Sitapur. He lived with his wife Naina Devi and two children in a rented house in Rashmi Khand, Bangla Bazar in Lucknow, where he earned a living as a lighting technician. According to family members, Mithun was picked up by police on December 16 from Anil Singh's house in Ratan Khand while he was at work, following a theft reported on November 29. Mithun's elder sister, Manorama, alleged that the family was not informed of his arrest and searched for him for three days.
